Mahani grew up in a family of musicians, and her father was a well-known composer and musician on the island. Her mother was a singer, and her grandfather was a traditional Rapa Nui musician. Mahani started playing the piano at the age of six, and by the time she was eight, she was already performing in public. She continued her music education in Santiago, Chile, where she studied at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música. She later moved to Germany, where she studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg. Mahani's talent as a pianist was recognized early on in her career, and she has won numerous awards and accolades for her performances. In 1997, she won first prize at the International Piano Competition in Viña del Mar, Chile. She also won the Grand Prix at the International Piano Competition in Santiago, Chile, in 1998.
