Eugen Cicero was a Romanian-German jazz pianist and composer who was born on June 27, 1940, in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. He was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a well-known conductor and composer. Eugen Cicero began playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. He received his formal music education at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, Hungary, where he studied classical music. After completing his studies, Eugen Cicero began his career as a classical pianist, performing in concerts and recitals throughout Europe. However, he soon became interested in jazz music and began incorporating jazz elements into his performances. He was particularly influenced by the music of Oscar Peterson, and he developed a unique style that blended classical and jazz music. In the 1960s, Eugen Cicero moved to Germany, where he became a popular jazz pianist. He recorded his first album, "Rokoko Jazz," in 1965, which was a fusion of classical music and jazz. The album was a commercial success and established Eugen Cicero as a leading jazz pianist in Germany. Over the next few years, Eugen Cicero recorded several more albums, including "Cicero's Chopin," which featured his interpretations of Chopin's music, and "Cicero's Bach," which featured his interpretations of Bach's music. He also performed in concerts and festivals throughout Europe and the United States, earning critical acclaim for his virtuosity and musicality. One of Eugen Cicero's most notable performances was at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1976, where he performed a solo piano concert. The concert was recorded and released as an album, "Live at Montreux," which became one of his most popular recordings. The album showcased Eugen Cicero's improvisational skills and his ability to blend classical and jazz music seamlessly. Eugen Cicero continued to record and perform throughout the 1980s and 1990s, releasing albums such as "Cicero's Classics," which featured his interpretations of classical music, and "Cicero's Jazz," which featured his original jazz compositions. He also collaborated with other musicians, including the German jazz guitarist Volker Kriegel. In addition to his musical career, Eugen Cicero was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München in Munich, Germany, and he also gave masterclasses and workshops throughout Europe. Eugen Cicero received several awards and honors throughout his career, including the Bavarian Order of Merit in 1992 and the Romanian Order of Cultural Merit in 1994. He was also inducted into the Cluj-Napoca Music Hall of Fame in Romania in 2010. Tragically, Eugen Cicero's career was cut short when he died in a car accident on December 5, 1997, at the age of 57. However, his legacy as a pioneering jazz pianist and composer continues to inspire musicians and music lovers around the world.
