João Luiz is a Brazilian classical guitarist who has gained international recognition for his virtuosic performances and innovative approach to the instrument. Born in 1980 in São Paulo, Brazil, Luiz began playing guitar at the age of nine and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied with some of Brazil's most renowned guitarists, including Henrique Pinto and Edelton Gloeden, and went on to earn a degree in music from the University of São Paulo. In 2002, Luiz co-founded the Brasil Guitar Duo with fellow guitarist Douglas Lora. The duo quickly gained a reputation for their dynamic performances and unique blend of Brazilian and classical music. They have performed at major venues and festivals around the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Ravinia Festival, and have released several critically acclaimed albums. In addition to his work with the Brasil Guitar Duo, Luiz has also established himself as a solo artist. He has performed with orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, and has collaborated with a wide range of musicians, including jazz guitarist John McLaughlin and Brazilian singer-songwriter Gilberto Gil. Luiz's playing is characterized by his technical precision, expressive phrasing, and deep musicality. He is known for his ability to bring out the unique qualities of each piece he plays, whether it is a Brazilian folk tune or a classical masterpiece. His performances are often praised for their energy, passion, and emotional depth. Luiz has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 2006, he and Lora won the Concert Artists Guild International Competition, which led to their debut at Carnegie Hall. They were also awarded the prestigious Aaron Copland Award in 2007. In 2011, Luiz was named a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music in London, and in 2016 he was awarded the Latin Grammy for Best Classical Album for his solo album "Bach's Complete Lute Suites." Despite his many accomplishments, Luiz remains dedicated to his craft and continues to push the boundaries of what is possible on the guitar.
