Jaufre Rudel was a medieval troubadour and composer who lived in the 12th century. He was born in Blaye, a town in southwestern France, around the year 1113. Not much is known about his early life, but it is believed that he was born into a noble family and received a good education. As a young man, Rudel became interested in poetry and music, and he began to compose his own songs and poems. He was part of a group of troubadours who traveled around southern France, performing for nobles and commoners alike. Rudel was known for his beautiful voice and his ability to write songs that were both romantic and spiritual. One of Rudel's most famous works is a song called "Lanquan li jorn," which tells the story of a knight who falls in love with a woman he has never met. The knight, who is Rudel himself, hears about the woman's beauty and grace from a traveling troubadour, and he becomes obsessed with her. He writes a song about her and sings it wherever he goes, hoping that she will hear it and come to him. In the song, Rudel expresses his longing for the woman and his belief that she is his true love. He sings: "Lanquan li jorn son lonc en mai, Et la flors volp, et li folh esmai, E la flors esmai, e li folh volp, E jo sui en amor, e no sai com." Translation: "When the days are long in May, and the flowers bloom, and the leaves tremble, and the leaves tremble, and the flowers bloom, and I am in love, and I don't know how." Rudel's song became very popular, and it was sung by troubadours all over southern France. It is considered one of the greatest love songs of the medieval period, and it has been recorded by many modern musicians. Another famous work by Rudel is a poem called "Quan lo rius de la fontana," which tells the story of a knight who falls in love with a fairy. The knight sees the fairy in a dream, and he becomes obsessed with her. He searches for her everywhere, but he cannot find her.
