Ukho Ensemble Kyiv is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2015 in Kyiv, Ukraine. The ensemble is made up of six musicians who are all graduates of the National Music Academy of Ukraine. The members of the ensemble are Oleksandr Korniev (violin), Oleksandr Perepelytsia (violin), Oleksandr Krysa (viola), Dmytro Hubyak (cello), Oleksandr Koshetz (clarinet), and Oleksandr Kryvoruchko (piano). The ensemble's name, "Ukho," means "ear" in Ukrainian, and reflects the group's focus on listening and communication in their music-making. The ensemble's repertoire includes works by classical composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms, as well as contemporary composers from Ukraine and around the world. One of the highlights of Ukho Ensemble Kyiv's early career was their performance at the 2016 LvivMozArt Festival, where they played Mozart's Clarinet Quintet in A major, K. 581. The ensemble's performance was praised for its precision and sensitivity, and they were invited back to the festival in 2017 to perform works by Brahms and Schumann. In 2018, Ukho Ensemble Kyiv won first prize at the International Chamber Music Competition in Trapani, Italy. The ensemble's performance of Brahms' Clarinet Quintet in B minor, Op. 115 was described by the judges as "a perfect balance of technical skill and emotional depth." The win at the competition helped to raise the ensemble's profile internationally, and they have since been invited to perform at festivals and concert series in Europe and Asia. One of the ensemble's most ambitious projects to date was their 2019 recording of the complete chamber music works of Ukrainian composer Myroslav Skoryk. The recording, which was released on the Naxos label, features works for various combinations of instruments, including a piano trio, a string quartet, and a clarinet quintet. The ensemble worked closely with Skoryk on the recording, and their performances were praised for their energy and passion. In addition to their performances and recordings, Ukho Ensemble Kyiv is also committed to education and outreach. The ensemble regularly gives masterclasses and workshops for young musicians in Ukraine and abroad, and they have worked with organizations such as the Ukrainian Youth Orchestra and the National Philharmonic of Ukraine. Overall, Ukho Ensemble Kyiv has quickly established itself as one of the leading chamber music ensembles in Ukraine and beyond. With their focus on communication and collaboration, as well as their commitment to both classical and contemporary repertoire, the ensemble is poised to continue making an impact on the international music scene for years to come.
