Mélisme(s) Vocal Ensemble is a French classical music ensemble that specializes in vocal music. The ensemble was founded in 2010 by its current artistic director, Gildas Pungier, who is also a tenor and a musicologist. The ensemble's name, "mélisme," refers to a vocal technique in which a single syllable is sung over several notes, creating a melodic ornamentation. The ensemble's main members are six professional singers, all of whom have extensive experience in the field of classical music. They are: Gildas Pungier (tenor), Caroline Tarrit (soprano), Caroline Gesret (soprano), Anne-Sophie Petit (mezzo-soprano), Guillaume Houcke (baritone), and Jean-Christophe Clair (bass). The ensemble is known for its tight harmonies, precise intonation, and expressive interpretations of vocal music. Mélisme(s) Vocal Ensemble has performed extensively throughout France and Europe, and has received critical acclaim for its performances. Some of the ensemble's major performances include its debut concert at the Festival de Saintes in 2010, where it performed works by Monteverdi and Gesualdo; its performance of Bach's St. John Passion at the Festival de Sablé in 2012; and its performance of Handel's Messiah at the Festival de La Chaise-Dieu in 2014. The ensemble has also collaborated with other musicians and ensembles, including the baroque orchestra Les Passions, the ensemble La Fenice, and the pianist Jean-François Heisser. In 2016, Mélisme(s) Vocal Ensemble collaborated with the composer Thierry Pécou on a new work, "Les Larmes de l'Inconnu," which was premiered at the Festival de La Chaise-Dieu. Mélisme(s) Vocal Ensemble has received several awards and honors for its performances and recordings. In 2012, the ensemble was awarded the Prix Bettencourt Schueller for its recording of Bach's St. John Passion. The ensemble's recording of Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610 was also nominated for a Victoire de la Musique Classique award in 2014. In addition to its performances and recordings, Mélisme(s) Vocal Ensemble is also committed to education and outreach. The ensemble regularly gives masterclasses and workshops for young singers, and has worked with schools and community organizations to promote classical music and vocal performance.
