Naomi Pinnock is a British composer of contemporary classical music. She was born in 1979 in Kent, England, and grew up in a musical family. Her mother was a pianist and her father was a composer and conductor. Pinnock began playing the piano at a young age and later learned to play the violin and viola. Pinnock studied music at the University of Manchester and later at the Royal College of Music in London. She also studied with the composer Wolfgang Rihm in Germany. During her studies, Pinnock developed an interest in contemporary classical music and began to experiment with different styles and techniques. Pinnock's early works were influenced by the music of composers such as György Ligeti and Morton Feldman. Her compositions often feature intricate rhythms and harmonies, as well as unconventional instrumentation. Pinnock has also been influenced by literature and visual art, and her works often have a narrative or visual element. One of Pinnock's early works, "Lines and Spaces," was commissioned by the London Sinfonietta and premiered in 2006. The piece features a large ensemble of instruments, including strings, winds, and percussion. The music is characterized by its complex rhythms and harmonies, as well as its use of extended techniques such as glissandi and harmonics. In 2008, Pinnock was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society Composition Prize for her work "Everything Does Change." The piece was commissioned by the London Symphony Orchestra and premiered at the Barbican Centre in London. "Everything Does Change" is a large-scale orchestral work that explores the theme of transformation. The music is characterized by its use of shifting textures and harmonies, as well as its use of unconventional percussion instruments such as wine glasses and metal pipes. Pinnock's music has been performed by a number of leading orchestras and ensembles, including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Ensemble Modern. In 2015, she was commissioned by the BBC Proms to write a new work for the Last Night of the Proms. In addition to her work as a composer, Pinnock is also a lecturer in composition at the Royal Holloway, University of London. She has also been involved in a number of educational projects, including a collaboration with the London Symphony Orchestra to create a series of workshops for young composers.
