Tierney Sutton is a renowned jazz vocalist and recording artist who has been captivating audiences with her soulful voice and impeccable technique for over two decades. Born on June 28, 1963, in Omaha, Nebraska, Sutton grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she began singing in church choirs at a young age. She was drawn to jazz music in her teenage years and started performing in local clubs and festivals while studying at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. After graduating from college, Sutton moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music. She quickly established herself as a sought-after session singer and worked with a variety of artists, including Ray Charles, Natalie Cole, and Diane Schuur. In 1998, Sutton formed her own band, the Tierney Sutton Band, which consisted of pianist Christian Jacob, bassist Trey Henry, and drummer Ray Brinker. The group's debut album, "Introducing Tierney Sutton," was released in 1999 and received critical acclaim for its innovative arrangements and Sutton's expressive vocals. Over the next two decades, Sutton and her band released a series of highly regarded albums, including "Blue in Green" (2001), "Dancing in the Dark" (2004), and "Desire" (2009). The group's music was characterized by its sophisticated harmonies, intricate rhythms, and Sutton's ability to convey deep emotion through her singing. Sutton's voice was often compared to that of Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, two of the greatest jazz vocalists of all time. Sutton's career reached new heights in 2011 when she was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album for her album "American Road." The album, which featured Sutton's interpretations of classic American songs, was praised for its inventive arrangements and Sutton's ability to infuse each song with her own unique style. Although Sutton did not win the award, the nomination brought her music to a wider audience and cemented her reputation as one of the most talented jazz vocalists of her generation. In addition to her work as a recording artist, Sutton has also been a highly sought-after performer on the live music scene. She has performed at some of the world's most prestigious jazz festivals, including the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Newport Jazz Festival, and the North Sea Jazz Festival. She has also toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe, performing in venues ranging from small clubs to large concert halls. Sutton's live performances are known for their energy, spontaneity, and emotional depth. She has a natural stage presence and a gift for connecting with her audience, whether she is performing a classic jazz standard or a contemporary pop song. Her concerts often feature a mix of original compositions and covers, showcasing her versatility as a vocalist and her ability to interpret a wide range of musical styles. Throughout her career, Sutton has received numerous awards and accolades for her contributions to the world of jazz music. In addition to her Grammy nomination, she has been named JazzWeek Vocalist of the Year multiple times and has received the Jazz Journalists Association's Jazz Vocalist of the Year award on several occasions. She has also been recognized for her work as an educator, teaching jazz vocal performance at the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music. Despite her many accomplishments, Sutton remains humble and dedicated to her craft.
