Paul Dutton is a Canadian musician, poet, and sound artist who has made significant contributions to the field of experimental music. Born on June 25, 1943, in Toronto, Canada, Dutton grew up in a musical family and began playing the trumpet at a young age. He later studied music at the University of Toronto, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1966. Dutton's early musical career was focused on jazz, and he played trumpet in various bands throughout the 1960s. However, he soon became interested in exploring new forms of musical expression and began experimenting with vocal techniques. In the early 1970s, he joined the experimental music group The Four Horsemen, which also included fellow Canadian artists Rafael Barreto-Rivera, Steve McCaffery, and bpNichol. The Four Horsemen were known for their innovative approach to vocal performance, which involved using a variety of techniques such as chanting, whispering, and singing in unison. They also incorporated elements of poetry and performance art into their work, creating a unique and highly influential style of experimental music. Dutton's work with The Four Horsemen brought him international recognition, and he went on to perform at major festivals and venues around the world. In 1975, the group released their first album, "Live in the West," which was followed by several more albums over the years. In addition to his work with The Four Horsemen, Dutton has also pursued a solo career as a sound artist and poet. He has released several albums of his own work, including "Mouth Pieces" (1981), "Under the Stairs" (1992), and "One Voice" (2001). Dutton's work has been recognized with numerous awards and honors over the years. In 1999, he was awarded the Governor General's Award for English-language poetry for his collection "Right Hemisphere." He has also received the Canada Council for the Arts Molson Prize (2002), the Griffin Poetry Prize (2004), and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Art Gallery of Ontario (2013). Despite his many accomplishments, Dutton remains committed to exploring new forms of musical and artistic expression. He continues to perform and create new work, and his contributions to the field of experimental music have had a lasting impact on generations of artists and musicians.
