The Scottish National Orchestra was founded by Sir Alexander Gibson, a Scottish conductor who had a vision of creating a world-class orchestra in Scotland. Gibson was a highly respected conductor who had previously worked with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Sadler's Wells Opera Company. He believed that Scotland deserved its own national orchestra and set out to make it a reality. The orchestra's first performance was in 1935 at the Glasgow Empire Theatre, and it was an instant success. The ensemble quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality performances and its commitment to promoting Scottish music. Over the years, the orchestra has performed with some of the world's most renowned conductors and soloists, including Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Colin Davis, and Martha Argerich. In 1977, the Scottish National Orchestra established its own chorus, which has since become an integral part of the ensemble. The chorus has performed in many of the orchestra's major performances, including Handel's Messiah and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. The Scottish National Orchestra & Chorus has a core membership of around 100 musicians, with additional players brought in for larger performances. The ensemble is led by Principal Conductor Thomas Søndergård, who has been with the orchestra since 2018. The performance was widely praised for its energy and enthusiasm, and it helped to cement the orchestra's reputation as one of the best in the world.
