Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, Vlaeva began playing the piano at the age of five and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. She studied at the National School of Music in Sofia and later at the Moscow State Conservatory, where she earned her master's degree in piano performance. Vlaeva's early career was marked by numerous awards and accolades. In 1991, she won first prize at the International Piano Competition in Senigallia, Italy, and in 1993 she was awarded the Grand Prix at the International Piano Competition in Jaén, Spain. She also won the Special Prize for Best Performance of a Spanish Work at the same competition. Vlaeva's talent and hard work soon caught the attention of the international music community, and she began to perform extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States. She has appeared as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. One of Vlaeva's most memorable performances was her debut at Carnegie Hall in 2001. She performed a program of works by Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff to critical acclaim, with The New York Times praising her "impressive technique and musicality."
