Gena Branscombe was a Canadian-American composer, pianist, and conductor who was born on November 4, 1881, in Picton, Ontario, Canada. She was the daughter of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Her mother was a singer, and her father played the organ and piano. Branscombe began playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. She studied piano with her father and later with other teachers in Toronto. In 1902, Branscombe moved to New York City to study music at the Institute of Musical Art (now known as the Juilliard School). She studied piano with Rafael Joseffy and composition with Percy Goetschius. She also studied conducting with Frank Damrosch and later became the first woman to conduct the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in 1913. Branscombe's early compositions were mostly songs and piano pieces. Her first published work was a song called "The Rose of Dawn," which was published in 1905. She went on to write many more songs, including "The Bird and the Brook," "The Wind in the Trees," and "The Sea Hath Its Pearls." In addition to her work as a composer, Branscombe was also a pianist and performed in many concerts throughout her career. She was known for her virtuosic piano playing and often performed her own compositions. Branscombe was also a teacher and taught piano and composition at the Institute of Musical Art and the Juilliard School. She was a mentor to many young composers, including Aaron Copland, who studied with her in the 1920s. Branscombe's compositions were influenced by the Romantic era and often featured lush harmonies and expressive melodies. She wrote in many genres, including songs, piano pieces, chamber music, and orchestral works. Some of her most notable works include the opera "The Dolorosa," the ballet "The Triumph of Time," and the orchestral work "The Indian Serenade." "The Dolorosa" was Branscombe's most ambitious work and was premiered in 1915. The opera tells the story of a young woman who is forced to marry a man she does not love. The music is lush and dramatic, with soaring melodies and rich harmonies. The opera was well-received and was performed in several cities throughout the United States. "The Triumph of Time" was a ballet that was premiered in 1923. The music is lively and rhythmic, with influences from jazz and popular music of the time. The ballet was a success and was performed by several dance companies throughout the United States. "The Indian Serenade" was an orchestral work that was premiered in 1925. The music is inspired by Indian music and features exotic harmonies and rhythms. The work was well-received and was performed by several orchestras throughout the United States. Branscombe continued to compose and perform throughout her life. She died on June 28, 1977, in New York City at the age of 95. She left behind a legacy of beautiful music and was a trailblazer for women in music.
