His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Fehringer showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Fehringer's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with his mother and later studied with some of the most prominent piano teachers in Vienna. He also studied composition and conducting, which helped him develop a deep understanding of music theory and structure. In 1943, Fehringer was drafted into the German army and served on the Eastern Front during World War II. He was captured by the Soviet army in 1945 and spent several years as a prisoner of war. During his captivity, Fehringer continued to play the piano and even gave concerts for his fellow prisoners. After the war, Fehringer returned to Vienna and resumed his music studies. He made his debut as a concert pianist in 1948 and quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented young pianists in Austria. He won several prestigious awards, including the Austrian State Prize for Music in 1952. Fehringer's career took off in the 1950s, and he began performing in major concert halls throughout Europe and the United States. He was known for his virtuosic technique and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. One of Fehringer's most memorable performances took place in 1956, when he played Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The concert was broadcast live on television and was watched by millions of people around the world. Fehringer's performance was widely praised, and he received a standing ovation from the audience. Fehringer continued to perform and record throughout the 1960s and 1970s. He also began teaching at the Vienna Academy of Music, where he mentored several young pianists who went on to have successful careers in their own right. In 1980, Fehringer suffered a stroke that left him partially paralyzed. He was forced to retire from performing, but he continued to teach and mentor young musicians.
