Jean-Louis Adam was a French classical music composer who lived from 1758 to 1848. He was born in Muttersholtz, a small town in the Alsace region of France. His father, Jean Adam, was a musician and composer, and he began teaching his son music at a young age. Jean-Louis showed a natural talent for music, and he quickly became proficient on several instruments, including the violin, piano, and organ. As a young man, Jean-Louis Adam moved to Paris to study music. He studied with several prominent composers, including François-Joseph Gossec and Jean-Baptiste Rey. He also became involved in the Parisian music scene, performing in concerts and composing music for various events. In 1784, Jean-Louis Adam was appointed as the music director of the Théâtre de Monsieur, a theater in Paris. He composed music for several productions at the theater, including operas, ballets, and plays. He also continued to compose music for other events, such as concerts and church services. One of Jean-Louis Adam's most famous works is his Christmas carol "Minuit, chrétiens" (known in English as "O Holy Night"). The lyrics were written by Placide Cappeau, a wine merchant and poet, and the music was composed by Adam. The carol was first performed in 1847, and it quickly became popular in France and around the world. Today, it is one of the most beloved Christmas carols of all time. In addition to his work as a composer, Jean-Louis Adam was also a respected music teacher. He taught at several schools and conservatories in Paris, and he had many students who went on to become successful musicians and composers in their own right. Jean-Louis Adam lived a long and productive life, and he continued to compose music well into his old age. He died in Paris in 1848, at the age of 90.
