The Westchester Philharmonic Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based in Westchester County, New York. Founded in 1983 by Paul Lustig Dunkel, the orchestra has become one of the most respected and acclaimed orchestras in the region. Paul Lustig Dunkel, a renowned flutist and conductor, was the founding music director of the Westchester Philharmonic Orchestra. He served in this role until 2001, during which time he led the orchestra to numerous successes and accolades. Dunkel was succeeded by Mark Mandarano, who served as music director from 2002 to 2007. The current music director of the Westchester Philharmonic Orchestra is Jaime Laredo, a world-renowned violinist and conductor. The Westchester Philharmonic Orchestra is comprised of approximately 60 professional musicians, many of whom are members of the New York Philharmonic and other major orchestras. The orchestra performs a wide range of classical music, from Baroque to contemporary, and has collaborated with many renowned soloists and conductors. One of the highlights of the Westchester Philharmonic Orchestra's history was its performance at Carnegie Hall in 1990. The orchestra was invited to perform as part of the "Great Orchestras of the World" series, and received critical acclaim for its performance of works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Stravinsky. In addition to its performances at Carnegie Hall, the Westchester Philharmonic Orchestra has also performed at Lincoln Center, the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, and other prestigious venues. The orchestra has also toured internationally, performing in Europe and Asia. The Westchester Philharmonic Orchestra has received numerous awards and honors throughout its history. In 1997, the orchestra was awarded the ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, recognizing its commitment to performing contemporary and lesser-known works. The orchestra has also been recognized by the Westchester Arts Council and the New York State Council on the Arts for its contributions to the cultural life of the region. In addition to its performances, the Westchester Philharmonic Orchestra is committed to music education and outreach.
