Margaret Rizza is a British composer of sacred music, known for her contemplative and meditative compositions that draw from a variety of musical traditions. Born in 1929 in London, Rizza grew up in a musical family and began playing the piano at a young age. She studied music at the Royal College of Music in London, where she focused on piano and composition. After completing her studies, Rizza worked as a music teacher and composer, writing music for film and television as well as for the concert hall. However, it was her interest in spirituality and meditation that led her to focus on sacred music. In the 1980s, Rizza began attending retreats at the Benedictine monastery of Prinknash Abbey in Gloucestershire, England, where she was introduced to Gregorian chant and other forms of liturgical music. Inspired by the beauty and simplicity of this music, Rizza began composing her own sacred music, drawing on her background in classical music as well as her interest in Eastern spirituality and meditation. Her compositions are characterized by their gentle melodies, rich harmonies, and use of chant and other traditional forms of sacred music. One of Rizza's most well-known works is her album "The Celtic Collection," which features a series of hymns and chants inspired by the Celtic tradition. The album includes pieces such as "Deep Peace," "The Lord Is My Shepherd," and "The Deer's Cry," which are often used in meditation and prayer. Another notable work by Rizza is her album "Fountain of Life," which features a series of hymns and chants inspired by the Christian tradition. The album includes pieces such as "O Lord, Hear My Prayer," "Ave Maria," and "Ubi Caritas," which are often used in worship services and other religious settings. In addition to her work as a composer, Rizza is also a sought-after speaker and workshop leader, and has led retreats and workshops on music and spirituality throughout the world. She has also written several books on spirituality and meditation, including "The Music of Silence" and "The Healing Power of Silence." Throughout her career, Rizza has been recognized for her contributions to sacred music, receiving numerous awards and honors for her work. In 2010, she was awarded the Order of St. Gregory the Great by Pope Benedict XVI in recognition of her contributions to the Catholic Church. Today, Rizza continues to compose and perform her music, and her work continues to inspire and uplift listeners around the world. Her music is a testament to the power of music to connect us to the divine, and to help us find peace and solace in times of struggle and uncertainty.
