Andrew Bolotowsky was born on August 28, 1942, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a violinist and his mother a pianist. Bolotowsky started playing the flute at the age of 12 and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Bolotowsky attended the High School of Music and Art in New York City and later went on to study at the Manhattan School of Music. He also studied with renowned flutists such as Julius Baker and Jean-Pierre Rampal. In the early 1960s, Bolotowsky became involved in the avant-garde music scene in New York City. He played with experimental composers such as John Cage and Morton Feldman and was a member of the New York Flute Club. Bolotowsky also performed with the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. In 1967, Bolotowsky co-founded the New York Flute Quartet, which became one of the most prominent chamber music ensembles in the United States. The quartet performed extensively throughout the country and recorded several albums, including works by Bach, Mozart, and Debussy. Bolotowsky was also a prolific solo performer and recorded numerous albums throughout his career. He was known for his virtuosic playing and his ability to interpret a wide range of musical styles, from Baroque to contemporary. In addition to his performing career, Bolotowsky was also a respected teacher. He taught at the Manhattan School of Music, the New School for Social Research, and the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He also gave masterclasses and workshops throughout the United States and Europe. Bolotowsky received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1972, he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study in Paris. He was also a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Solo Recitalist Grant and the New York State Council on the Arts Grant. Bolotowsky continued to perform and teach until his death on April 27, 2020, at the age of 77. He was remembered by his colleagues and students as a passionate and dedicated musician who had a profound impact on the world of classical music.
