Artist Info
Orkiestra Historyczna is a classical music ensemble that specializes in performing music from the Baroque and Classical periods on period instruments. The ensemble was founded in 2012 by the Polish conductor and harpsichordist Martyna Pastuszka, who serves as its artistic director. Pastuszka had previously founded the ensemble Arte dei Suonatori, which also specializes in early music, but she wanted to create a new ensemble that would focus specifically on the music of the 18th century. She assembled a group of musicians who shared her passion for historically informed performance and began rehearsing and performing together. The ensemble's main members include violinists Marta Niedźwiecka and Marta Krzyżanowska, violist Karolina Stasiowska, cellist Marcin Zdunik, and bassist Tomasz Pokrzywiński. They are joined by a rotating cast of guest musicians who play a variety of period instruments, including flutes, oboes, bassoons, horns, trumpets, and timpani. Orkiestra Historyczna has quickly established itself as one of the leading ensembles in the early music world. The ensemble has performed at major festivals and concert halls throughout Europe, including the Edinburgh International Festival, the Salzburg Festival, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Royal Albert Hall in London. One of the ensemble's most notable performances was its 2015 concert at the Royal Albert Hall, where it performed Handel's "Messiah" with the Choir of King's College, Cambridge. The performance was praised for its clarity, precision, and emotional depth, and it was broadcast on BBC Radio 3. Orkiestra Historyczna has also recorded several critically acclaimed albums, including "Mozart in Paris" (2016), which features Mozart's symphonies and arias that he composed during his travels to Paris in the 1770s, and "Bach: Brandenburg Concertos" (2018), which features Bach's six Brandenburg Concertos. The ensemble has received numerous awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. In 2017, it won the prestigious Gramophone Award for Best Baroque Instrumental Album for its recording of Bach's "Brandenburg Concertos." The ensemble was also nominated for a Grammy Award in 2019 for its recording of Mozart's "Requiem." Orkiestra Historyczna's success can be attributed to its commitment to historically informed performance practices and its dedication to bringing the music of the past to life in a way that is fresh, vibrant, and emotionally engaging. The ensemble's performances are characterized by their clarity, precision, and attention to detail, as well as their passion and energy.
