Jean Noté was a Belgian baritone singer who was born on August 23, 1858, in Verviers, Belgium. He was the son of a music teacher and began his musical training at a young age. Noté studied at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he was a student of Désiré Demest, a renowned Belgian baritone. He made his debut in 1884 at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, where he sang the role of Valentin in Gounod's Faust. Noté quickly gained a reputation as one of the leading baritones of his time. He was known for his powerful voice, his dramatic interpretation of roles, and his ability to convey emotion through his singing. He performed in many of the major opera houses of Europe, including the Paris Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, and La Scala in Milan. One of Noté's most famous roles was that of Escamillo in Bizet's Carmen. He first performed the role in 1890 at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie and went on to perform it many times throughout his career. Noté was also known for his performances in Verdi's operas, including Rigoletto, Il Trovatore, and La Traviata. Noté was highly regarded by his contemporaries and received many accolades throughout his career. In 1892, he was awarded the Order of Leopold, one of the highest honors in Belgium. He was also made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in France in 1903. Noté's career was not without its challenges. In 1902, he suffered a vocal crisis that forced him to take a break from performing. He spent several years working with vocal coaches and doctors to regain his voice. He eventually returned to the stage in 1906 and continued to perform until his retirement in 1914. Noté's legacy as a singer has endured long after his death. He was known for his beautiful voice, his dramatic performances, and his ability to connect with audiences.
