Andris Dzenītis is a Latvian composer who was born on August 23, 1978, in Riga, Latvia. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a composer and his mother a pianist. From a young age, Dzenītis was exposed to classical music and began playing the piano at the age of six. Dzenītis studied composition at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music in Riga, where he received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees. He continued his studies at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague in the Netherlands, where he earned a second Master's degree in composition. Dzenītis has received numerous awards and honors for his compositions, including the Latvian Great Music Award in 2011 and 2016, the International Rostrum of Composers Award in 2012, and the UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers Award in 2013. Dzenītis' music is characterized by its use of complex rhythms and harmonies, as well as its incorporation of electronic and multimedia elements. His compositions often explore themes of identity, memory, and the relationship between humans and technology. One of Dzenītis' most notable works is his opera "Dauka," which premiered in 2015 at the Latvian National Opera. The opera tells the story of a young woman who is forced to confront her past and her identity as a Latvian in the aftermath of World War II. The music of "Dauka" combines traditional Latvian folk melodies with contemporary classical techniques, creating a unique and powerful sound. Another significant work by Dzenītis is his orchestral piece "Māra," which was commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra and premiered in 2018. The piece is inspired by Latvian mythology and explores the themes of creation, destruction, and rebirth. "Māra" features a large orchestra and incorporates electronic elements, creating a dynamic and immersive sound world. In addition to his work as a composer, Dzenītis is also a professor of composition at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music. He has mentored many young composers and is dedicated to promoting contemporary classical music in Latvia and beyond.
