Schedel grew up in a musical family, with her father being a jazz pianist and her mother a music teacher. She started playing the piano at a young age and later learned to play the flute and saxophone. Schedel received her Bachelor of Music degree in flute performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1999. She then went on to earn her Master of Music degree in flute performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in 2001. In 2008, she received her Ph.D. in composition from the University of California, Berkeley. Schedel's compositions are known for their innovative use of technology and interdisciplinary collaborations. She has worked with scientists, engineers, and artists to create works that explore the intersection of music, technology, and science. One of her most notable works is "Affective Earth," a multimedia piece that combines music, video, and data visualization to explore the emotional impact of climate change. Schedel has also composed works for traditional ensembles, such as "The Edge of the World," a piece for string quartet that was premiered by the JACK Quartet in 2014.
