François Rebel was a French Baroque composer and violinist who was born in Paris on April 18, 1701. He was the son of Jean-Féry Rebel, a renowned composer and violinist who served as the director of the orchestra at the court of Louis XIV. François Rebel grew up in a musical family and received his early musical training from his father. At the age of 14, François Rebel was appointed as a violinist in the orchestra of the Paris Opera. He quickly established himself as a talented musician and began to compose his own music. In 1726, he was appointed as the director of the orchestra at the Paris Opera, a position he held until 1737. During his tenure as the director of the Paris Opera orchestra, François Rebel composed a number of operas and ballets. His most famous work from this period is the opera "Ulysse," which was first performed in 1703. The opera was a great success and was performed numerous times throughout France. In addition to his work at the Paris Opera, François Rebel also composed a number of chamber music works. His most famous chamber music work is the "Les caractères de la danse," which was first performed in 1715. The work is a suite of dances that showcases Rebel's skill as a composer and his ability to write music that is both elegant and lively. François Rebel was also a skilled violinist and performed regularly throughout France. He was known for his virtuosic playing and his ability to improvise. He was particularly admired for his ability to play the violin in a way that imitated the human voice. In 1737, François Rebel resigned from his position as the director of the Paris Opera orchestra and began to focus on his work as a composer. He continued to compose operas and ballets, but also began to write more sacred music. His most famous sacred work is the "Missa pro defunctis," which was first performed in 1750. François Rebel died in Paris on January 2, 1775. He was 73 years old. Despite his contributions to French music, his music fell out of favor in the years following his death. It was not until the 20th century that his music began to be rediscovered and appreciated by modern audiences. Today, François Rebel is remembered as one of the most important French composers of the Baroque era.
