He studied with his father and other local musicians, and by the age of 16, he was already a singing master himself. In 1770, he moved to Boston to further his musical education and career. In Boston, Belcher became a prominent figure in the city's musical scene. He worked as a singing master, organist, and composer, and he was highly respected for his musical abilities. He composed a number of works during this time, including hymns, anthems, and psalm tunes. One of Belcher's most famous works is his anthem "O Lord, Our Governor." This piece was written in 1794 and was performed at the inauguration of John Adams as the second President of the United States. Belcher's music was highly regarded during his lifetime, and he was often called upon to perform at important events. He played the organ at the Old South Church in Boston for many years, and he also performed at the inauguration of Massachusetts Governor John Hancock in 1780. In addition to his musical career, Belcher was also involved in politics. He served as a selectman in Stoughton and was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1796 to 1798. Belcher continued to compose music throughout his life, and his works were published in several collections. He died on June 25, 1836, in Dedham, Massachusetts, at the age of 85.
