Tony Lowry was a British composer who was born on May 22, 1928, in London, England. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Lowry showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later learned to play the violin and the cello. Lowry attended the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied composition with Alan Bush and conducting with Sir Adrian Boult. He also studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Nadia Boulanger. Lowry's early compositions were influenced by the music of Stravinsky, Bartok, and Shostakovich. Lowry's first major work was his Symphony No. 1, which he composed in 1952. The symphony was well-received and established Lowry as a promising young composer. He went on to compose several other orchestral works, including his Symphony No. 2, which was premiered by the London Symphony Orchestra in 1957. In addition to his orchestral works, Lowry also composed chamber music, choral music, and music for the stage. One of his most famous works is his opera, The Lady of Shalott, which was premiered at the Royal Opera House in London in 1958. The opera is based on the poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, and tells the story of a young woman who is cursed to live in a tower and weave a tapestry until she sees the outside world. Lowry's music is characterized by its use of complex rhythms, dissonant harmonies, and unconventional forms. He was known for his ability to create vivid musical images and his use of programmatic elements in his compositions. Lowry was also a respected conductor and served as the music director of the Royal Ballet from 1965 to 1971. He conducted many of the major orchestras in Europe and the United States, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. Lowry continued to compose and conduct throughout his life, and his music was performed by many of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles. He died on December 14, 1994, in London, England, at the age of 66. Lowry's legacy as a composer and conductor is significant. His music is still performed and recorded today, and his influence can be heard in the works of many contemporary composers.
