Born in Christchurch, New Zealand, on 10th May 1977, Fiona grew up in a family of musicians, which played a significant role in shaping her musical career. Fiona's love for music began at a young age, and she started playing the violin when she was just five years old. Her parents, who were both music teachers, recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Fiona's father, who was a jazz pianist, also played a significant role in her musical development, exposing her to different genres of music and teaching her how to improvise. Fiona's musical journey began when she joined the Christchurch Youth Orchestra at the age of nine. She quickly rose through the ranks and became the concertmaster of the orchestra when she was just 12 years old. Fiona's exceptional talent and dedication to music caught the attention of many, and she was soon invited to perform at various concerts and events. In 1990, Fiona was awarded a scholarship to study at the University of Canterbury, where she completed a Bachelor of Music degree with first-class honors. During her time at the university, Fiona continued to hone her skills and participated in various music competitions, winning several awards and accolades. After completing her studies, Fiona embarked on a professional career in music, performing at various concerts and events across New Zealand and Australia. In 1998, she was invited to perform at the prestigious Gisborne International Music Competition, where she won the top prize and was awarded the title of "Most Outstanding Musician." Fiona's success at the Gisborne International Music Competition opened up new opportunities for her, and she was soon invited to perform at various international music festivals and events. In 2001, she was invited to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where she received critical acclaim for her performance. Over the years, Fiona has collaborated with many renowned musicians and artists, including Dave Dobbyn, Hayley Westenra, and Bic Runga. She has also performed with various orchestras, including the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, and the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. One of Fiona's most significant achievements was the release of her debut album, "Fire and Light," in 2005. The album, which was produced by renowned New Zealand musician Mike Chunn, received critical acclaim and was a commercial success, selling over 10,000 copies in New Zealand alone. In 2007, Fiona was invited to perform at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, where she shared the stage with legendary musicians such as Herbie Hancock and George Benson. Her performance at the festival was a huge success, and she received a standing ovation from the audience. In 2011, Fiona released her second album, "Crossbow," which was a departure from her classical roots and featured a fusion of different genres, including jazz, folk, and world music.
