In Stil Moderno is a classical music ensemble that specializes in performing music from the 17th century. The ensemble was founded in 2011 by two musicians, Adam Knight Gilbert and Nathaniel Cox, who shared a passion for early music and historical performance practices. Adam Knight Gilbert is a baroque cellist and viola da gamba player who has performed with numerous early music ensembles, including the Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra and the Handel and Haydn Society. Nathaniel Cox is a cornetto player and early brass specialist who has performed with the New York Collegium, the Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra, and the Venice Baroque Orchestra. Together, Gilbert and Cox formed In Stil Moderno with the goal of exploring the rich and diverse repertoire of 17th-century music, which they felt was often overlooked in favor of the more well-known music of the Baroque era. They were joined by a group of like-minded musicians, including violinist Laura Gulley, harpsichordist Michael Sponseller, and soprano Jessica Petrus. In Stil Moderno quickly gained a reputation for their innovative and engaging performances, which combined historical accuracy with a modern sensibility. They were praised for their virtuosic playing, expressive interpretations, and lively stage presence. One of the ensemble's early highlights was their performance at the Boston Early Music Festival in 2013, where they presented a program of music by the Italian composer Giovanni Battista Fontana. The performance was hailed as a "revelation" by the Boston Globe, which praised the ensemble's "impeccable musicianship" and "passionate commitment to the music." In Stil Moderno went on to perform at numerous other festivals and venues, including the Berkeley Early Music Festival, the Indianapolis Early Music Festival, and the Yale Collection of Musical Instruments. They also released several critically acclaimed recordings, including their debut album, "In Stil Moderno: Italian Music of the Seventeenth Century," which was praised by Gramophone magazine for its "exquisite playing" and "impeccable taste." In addition to their performances and recordings, In Stil Moderno has also been recognized for their contributions to the field of early music. In 2015, they were awarded a grant from the American Musicological Society to support their research into the music of the 17th century. They have also been invited to present lectures and masterclasses at universities and conservatories across the United States. Despite their success, In Stil Moderno remains committed to their mission of bringing the music of the 17th century to a wider audience. They continue to explore new repertoire, experiment with different performance practices, and collaborate with other musicians and ensembles. Through their performances, recordings, and educational initiatives, they are helping to ensure that this rich and vibrant music will continue to be heard and appreciated for generations to come.
