Meinir Heulyn is a renowned Welsh harpist and composer who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born in 1960 in Llanrwst, North Wales, Heulyn grew up in a musical family and began playing the harp at the age of nine. She was inspired by her mother, who was also a harpist, and her father, who was a conductor and composer. Heulyn received her early musical education at the Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, where she studied under the tutelage of renowned harpist Osian Ellis. She later went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she received a scholarship to study with Skaila Kanga. Heulyn's talent as a harpist was quickly recognized, and she began performing professionally while still a student. She made her debut as a soloist with the Welsh National Orchestra at the age of 18, and went on to perform with many other orchestras and ensembles throughout the UK and Europe. One of the highlights of Heulyn's career was her performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1983, where she played the harp solo in Benjamin Britten's "War Requiem" under the baton of Sir Neville Marriner. She has taught at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, the Royal Academy of Music, and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, among other institutions. Heulyn's contributions to the world of classical music have been widely recognized, and she has received many awards and honors throughout her career. In 1991, she was awarded the Glyndwr Award for her services to Welsh music, and in 2003 she was made a Fellow of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. She has also been awarded the Welsh Music Guild Award and the Sir Geraint Evans Award for her contributions to Welsh music. Despite her many achievements, Heulyn remains humble and dedicated to her craft. She continues to perform, compose, and teach, and is widely regarded as one of the leading harpists and composers of her generation.
