He later went on to study at the Tashkent Conservatory, where he received a degree in composition. After completing his studies, Jakoulov began working as a composer and conductor in Uzbekistan. He quickly gained a reputation for his innovative and experimental approach to music, and his works were performed throughout the Soviet Union. In 1958, he was awarded the title of Honored Artist of Uzbekistan for his contributions to the country's music scene. In the 1960s, Jakoulov began to gain international recognition for his work. He was invited to participate in the International Composers' Congress in Rome in 1960, and his works were performed at festivals in Poland, Hungary, and Bulgaria. In 1964, he was awarded the Lenin Prize, one of the highest honors in the Soviet Union, for his opera "The Last Temptation." Despite his success in the Soviet Union, Jakoulov began to feel constrained by the limitations of the Soviet music scene. In 1975, he emigrated to the United States, where he settled in New York City. Jakoulov's music is characterized by its eclectic style, which draws on a wide range of influences, including Russian folk music, jazz, and avant-garde techniques. His works often feature complex rhythms and harmonies, and he was known for his use of unconventional instruments, such as the theremin and the glass harmonica. One of Jakoulov's most famous works is his Symphony No. 2, which was composed in 1961. The symphony is a powerful and emotional work that reflects the turbulent political and social climate of the Soviet Union at the time. It features a wide range of musical styles, from the lyrical and melodic to the dissonant and experimental. Another notable work by Jakoulov is his opera "The Last Temptation," which was composed in 1963. The opera tells the story of a young man who is torn between his love for a woman and his duty to his country. The work is notable for its use of traditional Uzbek music, which is woven into the score alongside more modern and experimental elements. Throughout his career, Jakoulov remained committed to pushing the boundaries of classical music and exploring new and innovative approaches to composition. He continued to compose and conduct until his death in 2009, leaving behind a legacy of groundbreaking and influential works.More....
