The ensemble was named after the first violinist, Arnold Guilet, who was a founding member of the Juilliard String Quartet. The original members were Arnold Guilet (first violin), Julius Levine (second violin), Boris Kroyt (viola), and David Soyer (cello). In 1952, Julius Levine was replaced by Michael Tree, and in 1969, the violist Boris Kroyt was replaced by Michael's brother, Lawrence Tree. The quartet continued to perform with this lineup until 2002, when Arnold Guilet retired and was replaced by Mark Steinberg.
