Lilyana Vassileva is a Bulgarian classical music artist who has made a name for herself as a world-renowned percussionist. Born on May 22, 1978, in Sofia, Bulgaria, Vassileva grew up in a family of musicians. Her father was a percussionist, and her mother was a pianist. From a young age, Vassileva was exposed to music and began playing the piano at the age of four. As a child, Vassileva was drawn to the sound of percussion instruments and began playing the drums at the age of eight. She quickly developed a passion for percussion and began studying with some of the best percussionists in Bulgaria. By the age of 12, Vassileva had already won several national competitions and was recognized as a rising star in the world of percussion. In 1996, Vassileva was accepted into the National Academy of Music in Sofia, where she studied percussion under the guidance of Professor Stoyan Yankoulov. During her time at the academy, Vassileva honed her skills and developed a deep understanding of the nuances of percussion music. After graduating from the academy in 2001, Vassileva began her professional career as a percussionist. She quickly gained recognition for her exceptional talent and was invited to perform with some of the most prestigious orchestras in Bulgaria, including the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra and the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra. In 2003, Vassileva was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London. During her time in London, Vassileva studied under some of the most renowned percussionists in the world, including Colin Currie and Evelyn Glennie. She also had the opportunity to perform with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. After completing her studies in London, Vassileva returned to Bulgaria and continued to perform with some of the country's top orchestras. In 2006, she was invited to perform at the prestigious Salzburg Festival in Austria, where she received critical acclaim for her performance of Steve Reich's "Drumming." Since then, Vassileva has performed at some of the most prestigious music festivals and venues in the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and Carnegie Hall in New York. She has also collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors and composers in the world, including Sir Simon Rattle, Valery Gergiev, and John Adams. In addition to her performances, Vassileva is also a dedicated educator. She has taught percussion at the National Academy of Music in Sofia and has given masterclasses and workshops around the world. She is passionate about sharing her knowledge and experience with the next generation of percussionists. Throughout her career, Vassileva has received numerous awards and accolades for her exceptional talent and contributions to the world of classical music. In 2010, she was awarded the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture's "Musician of the Year" award. She has also been recognized by the European Cultural Foundation and the International Percussion Competition in Luxembourg.
