Daniel Licht was an American composer and musician who was best known for his work in the field of classical music. He was born on March 13, 1957, in Detroit, Michigan, and grew up in a family that was deeply involved in music. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a classical pianist, which meant that music was a constant presence in his life from an early age. Licht began playing the piano when he was just five years old, and he quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He went on to study music at the University of Michigan, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in composition. After graduation, he moved to New York City to pursue a career in music. In the early years of his career, Licht worked as a composer and arranger for a variety of different projects. He wrote music for television commercials, films, and even video games. However, it was his work in the field of classical music that really set him apart. One of Licht's early successes came in 1990, when he was commissioned to write a piece for the Kronos Quartet. The resulting work, entitled "Cash," was a tribute to the legendary country singer Johnny Cash, and it showcased Licht's ability to blend different musical styles in a unique and compelling way. Over the years, Licht continued to write music for a wide range of different projects. He composed music for films such as "Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice" and "Hellraiser: Bloodline," as well as for television shows like "Dexter" and "Body of Proof." He also wrote music for video games, including "Silent Hill: Downpour" and "Dishonored." Despite his success in these other areas, it was Licht's work in the field of classical music that remained closest to his heart. He continued to write and perform classical music throughout his career, and he was widely regarded as one of the most talented and innovative composers of his generation. One of the highlights of Licht's career came in 2005, when he was commissioned to write a piece for the New York Philharmonic. The resulting work, entitled "Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra," was a tour de force that showcased Licht's ability to blend different musical styles and genres in a way that was both innovative and accessible. Licht's work was also recognized with a number of awards and honors over the years. In 2007, he won an ASCAP Film and Television Music Award for his work on the television show "Dexter." He was also nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for his work on the same show in 2011. Sadly, Licht passed away on August 2, 2017, at the age of 60. However, his legacy as a composer and musician continues to live on through his music. He was a true innovator in the field of classical music, and his work will continue to inspire and delight audiences for generations to come.
