Antonio de Ribera was a Spanish composer of the Baroque era, born in Valencia in 1660. He was the son of a musician, and his father's influence played a significant role in his musical education. Ribera began his musical studies at a young age, and by the time he was a teenager, he was already an accomplished musician. Ribera's early musical training was in the Spanish tradition, which was heavily influenced by the music of the Catholic Church. He studied under several prominent Spanish composers, including Francisco Correa de Arauxo and Juan Bautista Cabanilles. These composers were known for their use of the organ, and Ribera became an expert in this instrument. In his early twenties, Ribera moved to Italy to further his musical education. He studied under the famous Italian composer, Arcangelo Corelli, who was known for his contributions to the development of the concerto grosso. Ribera was greatly influenced by Corelli's work, and he began to incorporate elements of the concerto grosso into his own compositions. Ribera's first major work was a collection of sonatas for the violin and basso continuo, which he published in 1693. These sonatas were well-received, and they helped to establish Ribera as a composer of note. He continued to compose throughout his life, and his works were performed throughout Europe. One of Ribera's most famous works is his Stabat Mater, which he composed in 1707. The Stabat Mater is a hymn that is traditionally sung during Holy Week, and Ribera's version is considered to be one of the finest examples of Baroque music. The piece is scored for soprano, alto, tenor, and bass, and it features a rich, complex harmony that is typical of Ribera's style. Ribera's music was known for its complexity and sophistication.
