Tomoko Kanamaru is a renowned classical music artist who has made a name for herself as a pianist and chamber musician. Born in Tokyo, Japan, on August 10, 1975, Kanamaru showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Her parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue music as a career. Kanamaru's early musical education was in Japan, where she studied with renowned pianists such as Hiroko Nakamura and Akiko Iguchi. She also attended the Toho Gakuen School of Music in Tokyo, where she received a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance. After completing her undergraduate studies, Kanamaru moved to the United States to further her education. In the US, Kanamaru attended the Peabody Conservatory of Music at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, where she earned a Master of Music degree in piano performance. She also studied with renowned pianists such as Leon Fleisher and Robert McDonald. During her time at Peabody, Kanamaru won several awards and competitions, including the Peabody Concerto Competition and the Yale Gordon Concerto Competition. After completing her studies at Peabody, Kanamaru continued to perform and compete in various competitions. In 2001, she won the Washington International Piano Competition, which led to her debut performance at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. She also won the Hilton Head International Piano Competition in 2002, which further established her as a rising star in the classical music world. Kanamaru has performed as a soloist with many orchestras, including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra, and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. She has also performed in numerous chamber music concerts, collaborating with renowned musicians such as violinist Midori and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. In addition to her performances, Kanamaru is also a dedicated teacher. She has taught at the Peabody Conservatory of Music, the University of Maryland, and the University of Delaware. She is currently a faculty member at the University of Miami's Frost School of Music. Kanamaru's performances have been praised for their technical precision and emotional depth. She is known for her ability to bring out the nuances and subtleties of the music she plays, whether it is a complex piano concerto or a delicate chamber music piece.
