The Robert DeCormier Singers is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1971 by Robert DeCormier, a renowned conductor, arranger, and composer. The ensemble is known for its exceptional performances of choral music, ranging from classical to folk and spirituals. Robert DeCormier was born in 1922 in New York City and began his musical career as a singer and conductor in the 1940s. He studied at the Juilliard School of Music and later became the assistant conductor of the New York City Opera. He also worked as a conductor and arranger for the Robert Shaw Chorale, one of the most prestigious choral ensembles of the time. In 1971, DeCormier founded the Robert DeCormier Singers, a group of professional singers who shared his passion for choral music. The ensemble quickly gained a reputation for its exceptional performances and innovative programming, which included works by both classical and contemporary composers. One of the highlights of the Robert DeCormier Singers' career was their performance at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, where they sang the national anthems of the participating countries. The ensemble also performed at the inauguration of President Jimmy Carter in 1977, where they sang a medley of American folk songs. Over the years, the Robert DeCormier Singers collaborated with many renowned musicians and composers, including Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, and Pete Seeger. They also recorded several albums, including "The Road to Freedom," a collection of spirituals and gospel songs that was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1998. In addition to their performances and recordings, the Robert DeCormier Singers were also known for their educational outreach programs. They worked with schools and community groups to promote choral music and provide opportunities for young singers to develop their skills. Robert DeCormier passed away in 2017 at the age of 95, but his legacy lives on through the Robert DeCormier Singers. The ensemble continues to perform and inspire audiences with their exceptional choral music, and they remain one of the most respected and beloved classical music ensembles in the world.
