Albert Parlow was a renowned classical music composer who was born on May 12, 1894, in Vienna, Austria. He was the youngest of three children born to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Parlow showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Parlow's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with his mother and later studied with some of the most prominent music teachers in Vienna. He also studied composition with Franz Schreker, a well-known composer and conductor. In 1914, Parlow was drafted into the Austrian army and served in World War I. During his time in the army, he continued to compose music and even wrote a symphony. After the war, he returned to Vienna and resumed his studies. In 1920, Parlow moved to Berlin, where he worked as a freelance composer and pianist. He quickly established himself as a talented composer and gained recognition for his works. In 1923, he was awarded the Mendelssohn Prize for his Piano Sonata No. 1. Parlow's music was heavily influenced by the Romantic era, and he often incorporated elements of folk music into his compositions. He was also known for his use of unconventional harmonies and rhythms, which gave his music a unique sound. One of Parlow's most famous works is his Piano Concerto No. 1, which he composed in 1925. The concerto is known for its virtuosic piano part and its lush orchestration. It has been performed by some of the world's most renowned pianists, including Vladimir Horowitz and Martha Argerich. In 1929, Parlow moved to the United States and settled in New York City. He continued to compose music and became a professor of composition at the Juilliard School. He also worked as a conductor and pianist, performing his own works as well as those of other composers. During his time in the United States, Parlow composed several notable works, including his Symphony No. 2 and his String Quartet No. 1. He also wrote music for films and television, including the score for the 1953 film "The Robe." Parlow's music was well-received by critics and audiences alike. He was praised for his ability to blend traditional and modern elements in his compositions. His music was often described as emotional and expressive, with a strong sense of melody and harmony. In addition to his work as a composer, Parlow was also a respected music educator. He taught at several universities, including the University of Michigan and the University of California, Los Angeles. He was known for his dedication to his students and his ability to inspire them to pursue their own musical careers. Parlow continued to compose music until his death on December 10, 1958, in New York City. He left behind a legacy of beautiful and innovative music that continues to be performed and appreciated by musicians and music lovers around the world.
