The London Baroque Ensemble is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1978 by a group of musicians who shared a passion for Baroque music. The ensemble has since become one of the most respected and renowned Baroque ensembles in the world, known for its virtuosic performances and innovative interpretations of Baroque music. The founding members of the London Baroque Ensemble were violinist Ingrid Seifert, cellist Charles Medlam, and harpsichordist Terence Charlston. The ensemble was initially formed as a trio, but soon expanded to include other musicians, including flutist Rachel Brown and oboist Anthony Robson. Over the years, the London Baroque Ensemble has had a rotating cast of members, but the core group has remained relatively stable. In addition to Seifert, Medlam, Charlston, Brown, and Robson, other notable members have included violinist Richard Gwilt, violist Richard Tunnicliffe, and bassoonist Peter Whelan. The London Baroque Ensemble has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the world, including the Wigmore Hall in London, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Lincoln Center in New York. The ensemble has also been featured at numerous music festivals, including the Edinburgh International Festival, the Salzburg Festival, and the BBC Proms. One of the highlights of the London Baroque Ensemble's career was their performance of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos at the Wigmore Hall in 1985. The ensemble's interpretation of the concertos was praised for its clarity, precision, and energy, and it helped to establish the ensemble as one of the leading Baroque ensembles in the world. The London Baroque Ensemble has also been recognized for its recordings, which have received critical acclaim and numerous awards. In 1990, the ensemble won a Gramophone Award for their recording of Handel's Concerti Grossi, Op. 6. The ensemble has also been nominated for several other Gramophone Awards, as well as a Classical BRIT Award. In addition to their performances and recordings, the London Baroque Ensemble has also been involved in educational outreach programs, working with schools and community groups to promote the appreciation and understanding of Baroque music. The ensemble has also collaborated with other musicians and ensembles, including the Academy of Ancient Music and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Despite the many accolades and achievements of the London Baroque Ensemble, the ensemble remains committed to its original mission of exploring and interpreting the music of the Baroque period. The ensemble's dedication to this music has helped to establish it as one of the most respected and influential Baroque ensembles in the world, and it continues to inspire and delight audiences around the globe.More....
