Hans Matthison-Hansen was a Danish composer born on August 13, 1907, in the town of Horsens, Denmark. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. His father, Hans Hansen, was a well-known conductor and composer in Denmark, and his mother, Ingeborg Matthison, was a pianist and music teacher. Matthison-Hansen began his musical education at a young age, studying piano and violin with his mother. He later attended the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where he studied composition with Knud Jeppesen and piano with Victor Schiøler. He graduated in 1931 with a degree in composition. After graduation, Matthison-Hansen worked as a freelance composer and pianist, performing in concerts and composing music for various ensembles. He also taught music theory and composition at the Royal Danish Academy of Music from 1946 to 1977. Matthison-Hansen's music is characterized by its lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and use of traditional forms. He was influenced by the music of composers such as Bach, Mozart, and Brahms, as well as the Danish folk music tradition. One of Matthison-Hansen's most famous works is his Symphony No. 1, which he composed in 1939. The symphony is in four movements and features a lush orchestration and sweeping melodies. It was well-received by audiences and critics alike and helped establish Matthison-Hansen as one of Denmark's leading composers. In addition to his symphonies, Matthison-Hansen composed a number of chamber works, including string quartets, piano trios, and sonatas for various instruments. His chamber music is known for its intricate counterpoint and expressive melodies. Matthison-Hansen also composed a number of choral works, including his Requiem, which he composed in 1955. The Requiem is a powerful work that features a large choir and orchestra and is considered one of Matthison-Hansen's most important works. Throughout his career, Matthison-Hansen received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to Danish music. He was awarded the Order of the Dannebrog in 1957 and was made a Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog in 1977. He also received the Carl Nielsen Prize in 1972 and the Sonning Prize in 1980. Matthison-Hansen continued to compose music until his death on December 14, 1993, in Copenhagen, Denmark. His music continues to be performed and recorded by orchestras and ensembles around the world, and he is remembered as one of Denmark's most important composers of the 20th century.
