Argus Quartet is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2013. The quartet is made up of four members: violinists Jason Issokson and Clara Kim, violist Dana Kelley, and cellist Joann Whang. The ensemble has gained recognition for their innovative programming and dynamic performances. The quartet was formed when the four members were studying at the Colburn Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles. They quickly discovered a shared passion for chamber music and began performing together regularly. In 2013, they officially formed the Argus Quartet. Since their formation, the quartet has performed at major venues and festivals around the world. They have been featured at the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, and the Ravinia Festival, among others. They have also performed internationally in countries such as Germany, Italy, and Japan. One of the highlights of the quartet's career was their performance at the 2017 Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition in London. The competition is one of the most prestigious in the world, and the quartet was one of only ten ensembles selected to compete. They received high praise from the judges and were awarded the first prize. In addition to their success at the Wigmore Hall competition, the quartet has also received numerous other awards and honors. They were the first ensemble to win the Yale School of Music's prestigious Chamber Music Competition in 2017. They were also awarded the M-Prize Chamber Arts Competition in 2018, which is one of the largest chamber music competitions in the world. The quartet is known for their innovative programming, which often includes works by contemporary composers alongside more traditional repertoire. They have commissioned and premiered works by composers such as Ted Hearne, Christopher Cerrone, and Juri Seo. One of the quartet's most notable projects was their "The Debussy Project," which was a multi-year exploration of the works of French composer Claude Debussy. The project included performances of all of Debussy's string quartets, as well as works by other composers who were influenced by Debussy's music. The quartet has also collaborated with a number of other musicians and ensembles. They have performed with pianist Jonathan Biss, clarinetist David Shifrin, and the Dover Quartet, among others. In addition to their performances, the quartet is also committed to education and outreach. They have worked with students at the Colburn School, the Yale School of Music, and the University of Michigan, among others. They have also participated in community outreach programs, bringing their music to underserved communities. Overall, the Argus Quartet is a dynamic and innovative ensemble that has quickly gained recognition for their exceptional performances and innovative programming. With their commitment to both traditional repertoire and contemporary works, they are sure to continue to be a major force in the world of classical music for years to come.More....
