The piece is inspired by the concept of eternal recurrence, a philosophical idea that suggests that all events in the universe repeat themselves infinitely. Another notable work by Sergeant is "The Art of Losing," a piece for choir and orchestra that was commissioned by the Huddersfield Choral Society and premiered in 2019. The piece is based on a poem by Elizabeth Bishop and explores themes of loss and grief. In addition to his work as a composer, Sergeant is also a lecturer in music at the University of Huddersfield. He has written several academic articles on the use of mathematics in music composition and is considered an expert in the field.
