Matthew Sergeant is a contemporary classical music composer who was born in 1984 in the United Kingdom. He grew up in a musical family, with his father being a professional musician and his mother a music teacher. From a young age, Sergeant showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano and violin. Sergeant's formal music education began at the age of eight when he started taking piano lessons. He later went on to study music at the University of York, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree. Since completing his PhD, Sergeant has continued to compose music and has gained a reputation for his innovative and experimental approach to classical music. His works often incorporate elements of mathematics and science, as well as influences from other genres such as jazz and electronic music. One of Sergeant's most notable works is "The Eternal Recurrence," a piece for orchestra that was commissioned by the BBC Philharmonic and premiered in 2016. The piece is inspired by the concept of eternal recurrence, a philosophical idea that suggests that all events in the universe repeat themselves infinitely. Another notable work by Sergeant is "The Art of Losing," a piece for choir and orchestra that was commissioned by the Huddersfield Choral Society and premiered in 2019. The piece is based on a poem by Elizabeth Bishop and explores themes of loss and grief. In addition to his work as a composer, Sergeant is also a lecturer in music at the University of Huddersfield. He has written several academic articles on the use of mathematics in music composition and is considered an expert in the field.
