The Yale Camerata is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1964 by the renowned choral conductor, Robert Shaw. The ensemble is based at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, and is made up of both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as members of the local community. The Yale Camerata has a long and distinguished history of performing a wide range of choral music, from medieval chant to contemporary works. The ensemble has collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors and soloists, and has performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls and festivals around the world. One of the highlights of the Yale Camerata's early years was its performance of Bach's Mass in B Minor in 1967, which was conducted by Robert Shaw himself. This performance was widely acclaimed and helped to establish the ensemble's reputation as one of the finest choral groups in the United States. Over the years, the Yale Camerata has continued to perform a wide range of choral music, including works by Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, and many others. The ensemble has also commissioned and premiered numerous new works by contemporary composers, including Ned Rorem, John Harbison, and Jennifer Higdon. In addition to its regular concert performances, the Yale Camerata has also been involved in a number of recording projects. The ensemble's recordings have received critical acclaim and have won several awards, including a Grammy Award for Best Choral Performance in 1985 for its recording of Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem. The Yale Camerata has also been recognized for its educational outreach programs, which have included workshops and masterclasses for local schoolchildren and community groups. These programs have helped to inspire a new generation of young musicians and choral singers, and have helped to promote the importance of choral music in the community. Today, the Yale Camerata continues to be one of the leading choral ensembles in the United States. The ensemble is led by its current director, Marguerite Brooks, who has been with the group since 1991. Under her leadership, the Yale Camerata has continued to perform a wide range of choral music, and has maintained its commitment to excellence in both performance and education.
