In 1968, Geraldine was accepted into the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. She studied under some of the most renowned piano teachers of the time, including Rosina Lhevinne and Adele Marcus. During her time at Juilliard, Geraldine won several awards and competitions, including the prestigious Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition in 1972. After graduating from Juilliard, Geraldine began her professional career as a concert pianist. She quickly gained a reputation for her technical skill and musical interpretation. She performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. One of Geraldine's most memorable performances was at the 1978 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow. She was the first American pianist to compete in the competition, and her performance of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 earned her a standing ovation from the audience and the judges. Although she did not win the competition, her performance was widely praised, and she gained international recognition as a pianist. Throughout her career, Geraldine recorded several albums, including works by Beethoven, Chopin, and Rachmaninoff. Her recordings were critically acclaimed and earned her several awards, including a Grammy Award for Best Classical Instrumental Soloist Performance in 1983.
