The Thuringia Philharmonic Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based in the German state of Thuringia. The orchestra was founded in 1952 as the Sinfonieorchester des Kulturhauses in the city of Gotha. In 1992, the orchestra was renamed the Thuringia Philharmonic Orchestra and has since become one of the most renowned orchestras in Germany. The Thuringia Philharmonic Orchestra is composed of approximately 80 musicians, including string, woodwind, brass, and percussion players. The orchestra is led by its principal conductor, Stefan Fraas, who has been with the ensemble since 2013. Fraas is a highly respected conductor and has worked with many other orchestras in Germany and abroad. Over the years, the Thuringia Philharmonic Orchestra has performed in many prestigious venues throughout Germany and Europe, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, and the Musikverein in Vienna. The orchestra has also collaborated with many renowned soloists, including pianist Lang Lang, violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. One of the highlights of the Thuringia Philharmonic Orchestra's history was its performance at the opening ceremony of the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Munich. The orchestra performed alongside the Bavarian State Orchestra and the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra in front of a global audience of millions. The Thuringia Philharmonic Orchestra has also received numerous awards and accolades throughout its history. In 2015, the orchestra was awarded the German Record Critics' Award for its recording of works by composer Franz Schubert.
