Emil Miland is a renowned cellist in the world of classical music. Born in San Francisco, California, on August 22, 1965, Miland grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Miland started playing the cello at the age of six and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Miland's early musical education was under the tutelage of Margaret Rowell, a renowned cello teacher in the San Francisco Bay Area. He continued his studies at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he earned his Bachelor of Music degree. Miland then went on to study with the legendary cellist, Bernard Greenhouse, at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where he earned his Master of Music degree. Miland's career as a professional cellist began in 1989 when he joined the San Francisco Opera Orchestra. He quickly established himself as a versatile musician, performing in a wide range of musical genres, including opera, chamber music, and orchestral music. Miland has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the San Francisco Symphony, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. One of Miland's most significant achievements was his collaboration with the composer Jake Heggie. Miland premiered Heggie's cello concerto, "Three Meditations," in 2003, and the work has since become a staple of the cello repertoire. Miland has also premiered several other works by Heggie, including "The Deepest Desire," a song cycle for cello and voice. Miland has also collaborated with many other composers, including John Adams, Aaron Jay Kernis, and Mark Adamo. He has premiered numerous works written specifically for him, including "The Blue Voice of the Water" by David Carlson and "The Light Within" by David Conte. In addition to his work as a performer, Miland is also an accomplished teacher. He has taught at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of California, Santa Cruz. Miland is currently on the faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Miland has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1998, he was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which recognizes outstanding young musicians. He has also been a recipient of the San Francisco Symphony's Outstanding Achievement Award and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music's Distinguished Alumni Award. Miland's recordings have received critical acclaim and have been featured on many radio programs, including NPR's "Performance Today." His discography includes recordings of works by Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, and Schumann, as well as contemporary works by Heggie, Kernis, and Adamo. Miland's performances are known for their emotional depth and technical virtuosity. He has been praised for his ability to convey the full range of human emotions through his playing, from the most tender and intimate moments to the most dramatic and powerful.
