Ferdinand's Consort is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2005 by a group of musicians who shared a passion for early music. The ensemble is named after Ferdinand III, the Holy Roman Emperor who was a patron of the arts and a lover of music. The founding members of Ferdinand's Consort were violinist Maria Ferré, cellist David Starkweather, and harpsichordist John Doe. They were later joined by flutist Sarah Johnson and violist Emily Chen. The ensemble's repertoire focuses on music from the Baroque and early Classical periods, with a particular emphasis on the works of J.S. Bach. Ferdinand's Consort has performed at numerous venues throughout the United States, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center. They have also toured internationally, performing in Europe and Asia. The ensemble has collaborated with many renowned musicians, including cellist Yo-Yo Ma and soprano Renée Fleming. One of the highlights of Ferdinand's Consort's career was their performance at the 2010 Bach Festival in Leipzig, Germany. The festival is held annually in honor of J.S. Bach, who spent the last 27 years of his life in Leipzig. Ferdinand's Consort was invited to perform Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 5, which is considered one of his most complex and challenging works. The ensemble received a standing ovation from the audience and was praised for their virtuosity and musicality. In addition to their performances, Ferdinand's Consort has also received numerous awards and accolades. They were the recipients of the 2008 Early Music America/Naxos Recording Competition, which recognizes outstanding recordings of early music. Their album, "Bach: The Brandenburg Concertos," was praised for its technical precision and emotional depth. Ferdinand's Consort has also been recognized for their educational outreach programs. They have worked with schools and community organizations to introduce young people to classical music and the history of early music. The ensemble has also conducted masterclasses and workshops for aspiring musicians. Despite their success, Ferdinand's Consort remains committed to their mission of bringing early music to a wider audience. They continue to perform and record new works, and to collaborate with other musicians and ensembles. Their dedication to their craft and their passion for early music have made them one of the most respected and beloved ensembles in the classical music world.
