Lev Ljova Zhurbin, known professionally as Ljova, is a Russian-born composer, arranger, and violist. He was born on February 18, 1978, in Moscow, Russia, into a family of musicians. His father, Alexander Zhurbin, is a well-known composer, and his mother, Irina Mozharova, is a pianist. Ljova grew up surrounded by music and began playing the violin at the age of four. Ljova's family moved to the United States in 1990, and he continued his musical education at the Juilliard School in New York City. He studied with Samuel Rhodes, the former violist of the Juilliard String Quartet, and also took composition lessons with Richard Danielpour and John Corigliano. Ljova's music is a unique blend of classical, folk, and jazz influences. He is known for his innovative arrangements of traditional music from around the world, as well as his original compositions. His music has been performed by some of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Seattle Symphony, and the Moscow Soloists. One of Ljova's most famous works is "Vjola Suite," a collection of pieces for solo viola that he composed in 2006. The suite is a tribute to Ljova's grandfather, who was a professional violist in the Soviet Union. The music is inspired by traditional Russian and Eastern European folk music, and Ljova's virtuosic playing showcases the full range of the viola's capabilities. Another notable work by Ljova is "Bagel on the Malecon," a piece for string quartet that he composed in 2008. The piece was inspired by Ljova's travels to Cuba and features a lively, rhythmic melody that evokes the energy and vibrancy of Havana. Ljova has also collaborated with a wide range of musicians and artists, including Yo-Yo Ma, the Kronos Quartet, and the Silk Road Ensemble. He has composed music for film and television, including the theme music for the popular NPR program "Radiolab." In addition to his work as a composer and performer, Ljova is also a passionate advocate for music education. He has taught workshops and masterclasses around the world and is committed to making music accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds. Overall, Ljova's music is a testament to the power of cross-cultural collaboration and the enduring appeal of traditional music. His innovative arrangements and original compositions have earned him a reputation as one of the most exciting and dynamic composers working today.
