The Portland State University Chamber Choir is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Portland, Oregon. The choir was founded in 1975 by Bruce Browne, who served as its director until 2014. Since then, the choir has been led by Ethan Sperry, who has continued to build on the ensemble's legacy of excellence. The Portland State University Chamber Choir is made up of approximately 40 singers, all of whom are students at Portland State University. The choir is known for its exceptional musicianship, precision, and expressive performances. Over the years, the choir has performed a wide range of repertoire, from Renaissance motets to contemporary works. One of the highlights of the choir's early years was its performance at the 1984 World's Fair in New Orleans. The choir was one of only a handful of choirs from around the world to be invited to perform at the fair, and its performance was widely praised for its beauty and artistry. In the years that followed, the Portland State University Chamber Choir continued to build its reputation as one of the finest collegiate choirs in the country. The choir has performed at numerous festivals and competitions, including the Oregon Bach Festival, the National Collegiate Choral Organization Conference, and the American Choral Directors Association Conference. One of the choir's most notable achievements came in 2002, when it won the Grand Prize at the Florilège Vocal de Tours, one of the most prestigious choral competitions in the world. The choir's performance at the competition was described as "stunning" and "transcendent," and it cemented the choir's reputation as a world-class ensemble. In addition to its many performances and awards, the Portland State University Chamber Choir has also made several recordings over the years. Its first recording, released in 1987, featured works by Renaissance composer Orlando di Lasso. Since then, the choir has released several more recordings, including a critically acclaimed album of works by contemporary composer Morten Lauridsen. Throughout its history, the Portland State University Chamber Choir has been committed to promoting choral music and supporting the next generation of choral musicians. The choir has collaborated with numerous composers and conductors, and it has commissioned several new works over the years. In addition, the choir has established a scholarship fund to support students who are pursuing careers in choral music.
