Dan Joseph is a contemporary classical music composer, performer, and curator based in New York City. He was born in 1959 in San Francisco, California, and grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a classical pianist and music teacher. Joseph started playing the piano at a young age and later learned to play the guitar and other instruments. Joseph studied music composition and theory at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1981. He then moved to New York City to pursue a career in music. In the early 1980s, he became involved in the downtown music scene, which was characterized by experimental and avant-garde music. He played in various bands and ensembles, including the groups The Swans and The Toneburst Ensemble. In the mid-1980s, Joseph began to focus on composing his own music. He was influenced by minimalist composers such as Steve Reich and Philip Glass, as well as by the experimental music of John Cage and the Fluxus movement. Joseph's early works were characterized by repetitive patterns and simple harmonies, often played on acoustic instruments such as guitar, piano, and percussion. One of Joseph's early compositions was "Tonalization," a piece for solo guitar that he wrote in 1986. The piece features a repeating pattern of harmonics and open strings, creating a shimmering, meditative effect. Another early work was "Raga," a piece for guitar and tabla that he wrote in 1987. The piece combines Indian classical music with minimalist techniques, creating a hypnotic, trance-like atmosphere. In the 1990s, Joseph began to incorporate electronic instruments and technology into his compositions. He became interested in the possibilities of computer-generated music and started to experiment with software programs such as Max/MSP and SuperCollider. He also began to use MIDI controllers and other electronic devices to manipulate and process acoustic instruments. One of Joseph's most notable works from this period is "Electroacoustic Music for Guitar and Computer," a suite of pieces that he composed between 1994 and 1996. The suite features six movements, each exploring different aspects of the relationship between acoustic and electronic sound. The pieces range from sparse, atmospheric soundscapes to dense, rhythmic textures. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Joseph became increasingly interested in the intersection of music and visual art. He began to collaborate with visual artists and to create multimedia installations and performances. One of his most ambitious projects was "Migrations," a multimedia installation that he created in collaboration with visual artist Paula Matthusen. The installation featured a series of interconnected rooms, each containing a different sound and visual environment. Visitors were invited to explore the space and to interact with the sounds and images. In recent years, Joseph has continued to explore new technologies and to collaborate with other artists. He has created works for dance, theater, and film, as well as for traditional concert settings. He has also continued to perform as a guitarist and to curate concerts and festivals of experimental music. One of Joseph's most recent works is "Tonalities," a piece for guitar and electronics that he composed in 2019. The piece features a series of slowly evolving harmonies and textures, created through the use of live processing and looping.
