Victoria Mallory was a renowned American soprano and actress, best known for her performances in musical theater and opera. Born on December 20, 1948, in New York City, Mallory grew up in a family of musicians and performers. Her father, Herbert Grossman, was a violinist and conductor, while her mother, Jean Mallory, was a singer and actress. Mallory's parents divorced when she was young, and she was raised by her mother and stepfather, actor and director Richard France. Mallory showed an early interest in music and began studying piano and voice at a young age. She attended the High School of Performing Arts in New York City and later studied at the Juilliard School of Music. Mallory made her professional debut in 1969 in the Broadway production of "Follies," directed by Harold Prince. She played the role of Young Heidi and received critical acclaim for her performance. Mallory went on to appear in several other Broadway productions, including "A Little Night Music," "West Side Story," and "Candide." She also performed in regional theater productions and made her opera debut in 1976 in the New York City Opera's production of "The Ballad of Baby Doe." Mallory's operatic repertoire included roles in "La Bohème," "The Marriage of Figaro," and "The Magic Flute." In addition to her work in musical theater and opera, Mallory was also a prolific concert performer. She appeared with orchestras across the United States and Europe, performing works by composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms. Mallory was particularly known for her interpretations of the works of Richard Strauss, and she recorded several of his songs and operatic arias. One of Mallory's most notable performances was in the 1985 Broadway production of "A Little Night Music," in which she played the role of Anne Egerman. Mallory received a Tony Award nomination for her performance and was praised for her singing and acting abilities. She also appeared in the 1990 revival of "Show Boat," playing the role of Magnolia Hawks. Mallory's career was tragically cut short in 2014 when she was killed in a car accident in New York City. She was 65 years old. Mallory's death was mourned by the musical theater and opera communities, and many of her colleagues and fans paid tribute to her talent and artistry. Throughout her career, Mallory received numerous awards and honors for her performances. She was a recipient of the Richard Tucker Award, the Marian Anderson Award, and the National Opera Institute Award. Mallory was also inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2013, just one year before her death.
