Pietro Antonio Giramo was an Italian composer of the Baroque era, born in Naples in 1668. He was the son of a musician and began his musical education at a young age, studying with his father and other local musicians. He showed great talent and was soon recognized as a prodigy. Giramo's early works were influenced by the Neapolitan school of music, which was known for its dramatic and expressive style. He quickly gained a reputation as a skilled composer and performer, and was soon invited to perform at the royal court in Naples. In 1690, Giramo moved to Rome, where he continued to compose and perform. He quickly became a favorite of the city's aristocracy, and his works were performed at many of the city's most prestigious venues. He also began to receive commissions from the church, and his sacred music became particularly popular. Giramo's music was characterized by its emotional intensity and virtuosity. Giramo also composed a number of sacred works, including masses, motets, and oratorios. His "Stabat Mater" is particularly well-known, and has been performed by many of the world's leading choirs and orchestras. Despite his success as a composer, Giramo struggled with financial difficulties throughout his life. He was often forced to rely on the patronage of wealthy individuals in order to support himself and his family. Nevertheless, he continued to compose and perform until his death in 1721.
