Luis Leguia was a renowned classical music artist who was born on August 15, 1929, in Lima, Peru. He was the son of a prominent Peruvian composer, Luis Antonio Leguia, who was also a conductor and music teacher. From a young age, Luis Leguia showed a keen interest in music and began studying the piano under the guidance of his father. As a child prodigy, Luis Leguia quickly gained recognition for his exceptional talent and was soon performing in public concerts. He made his debut as a soloist with the Lima Symphony Orchestra at the age of 12, playing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major. This performance was widely acclaimed, and it marked the beginning of a long and illustrious career in music. Luis Leguia continued his musical education at the National Conservatory of Music in Lima, where he studied under the renowned pianist and composer, Teodoro Valcárcel. He also received guidance from other notable musicians, including the pianist Claudio Arrau and the conductor Fritz Busch. In 1951, Luis Leguia won a scholarship to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he continued his training under the tutelage of Rosina Lhévinne. He also studied composition with Vincent Persichetti and conducting with Jean Morel. During his time at Juilliard, Luis Leguia won several awards and prizes, including the prestigious Naumburg Award in 1954. After completing his studies at Juilliard, Luis Leguia embarked on a successful career as a concert pianist, performing extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and South America. He was known for his virtuosic technique, his sensitive interpretations, and his wide-ranging repertoire, which included works by Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, and many others. Luis Leguia also made several recordings throughout his career, including a highly acclaimed album of Chopin's piano music for the RCA Victor label. He was also a dedicated teacher, and he taught at several institutions, including the National Conservatory of Music in Lima, the University of Miami, and the University of Southern California. Throughout his career, Luis Leguia received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the world of classical music. In 1969, he was awarded the Order of Merit by the Peruvian government, and in 1989, he was named a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government. He was also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Royal Academy of Music in London. One of the highlights of Luis Leguia's career was his performance at the White House in 1978, where he played for President Jimmy Carter and his guests. He also performed at several other prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Royal Albert Hall. Luis Leguia continued to perform and teach until his death on December 28, 1997, at the age of 68.
